Angelique Rosa Marín working in a labAngelique Rosa Marín, a native Puerto Rican from Carolina, is the U.S. Caribbean Coral Rescue Coordinator for Puerto Rico with Florida Sea Grant. Her role is to develop and implement a regional coral rescue strategy in partnership with stakeholders across the U.S. Caribbean. Angelique’s responsibilities include developing a Regional Coral Rescue Plan and establishing a U.S. Caribbean Coral Rescue Network. Angelique has more than 7 years of experience using bioindicators in coastal environments, an academic background in biology, environmental science, and marine science, and significant experience in collaboration, coordination, management, science communication, outreach, and education.

Angelique’s research background explores the feasibility of benthic foraminifera as bioindicators of environmental health in coral reefs and seagrasses from Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Salinas, Puerto Rico, and in Heron Island Research Station at the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia. As a National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration-Center for Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Fellow (NOAA-CCME), she worked on testing larger benthic foraminifera as coral bleaching proxies. Angelique also co-founded a 3-year-long National Science Foundation funded program, Code to Communicate, to provide early-career researchers training in science communication strategies and coding practices. Lastly, as an Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography-Limnology and Oceanography Research Exchange Fellow (ASLO-LOREX), Angelique brings an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to the role. Outside of science, Angelique is a certified Yoga Teacher and enjoys exploring paddle trails, hiking, going to the beach, playing volleyball, travel and staying active!

Angelique holds a B.Sc. in General Biology from the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamón, an M.Sc. in Environmental Science with a specialization in Marine and Estuarine Ecosystems from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee, Florida, and she is currently completing her Ph.D in Marine Science with the College of Marine Science, University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, Florida.

As the U.S. Caribbean Coral Rescue Coordinator for Puerto Rico, Angelique works closely with Logan Williams, the U.S. Caribbean Coral Rescue Coordinator for USVI, to provide leadership and coordination for coral rescue efforts across the U.S. Caribbean. This work includes developing a Regional Coral Rescue Plan for the U.S. Caribbean to guide restoration and rescue initiatives, establishing a U.S. Caribbean Coral Rescue Network to connect coral managers, researchers, and practitioners, and increasing community awareness of coral conservation through targeted outreach initiatives. Angelique serves as a liaison between local organizations, such as the Department of Natural Resources (DRNA) in Puerto Rico, and federal partners such as the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to strengthen regional collaboration, identify resource and knowledge gaps, and advance coral rescue goals.
