Overview:
UF/IFAS and Florida Sea Grant improve the production and profitability of commercially farmed hardshell clams and Eastern oysters in Florida waters. -

Focuses on applied research for hatchery, nursery, and growout techniques. Information is shared with shellfish growers through workshops, fact sheets, and the UF/IFAS Online Resource Guide for Florida Shellfish Aquaculture. -
Genetic and Breeding Goals:
Current research aims to develop genetic and breeding techniques to improve shellfish growth and disease resistance. It also focuses on breeding oysters and clams that better tolerate extreme summer heat. -
New Candidate Species:
The sunray venus clam has been introduced as a new species to help diversify Florida’s clam farming industry. Research indicates that culture methods for this species should be feasible for most shellfish growers across the state. -
Footer and Contact Information:
Includes the web address FLSEAGRANT.ORG/SHELLFISHCULTURE/ and states that Florida Sea Grant is a member of the National Sea Grant College Program network, supported by NOAA.
