Florida Sea Grant is now accepting applications for the 2027 FSG-Guy Harvey Fellowship Program from graduate students at Florida universities who are conducting research that will help support the sustainable management of marine fish. Applications are due to Florida Sea Grant by 11:39 p.m. Eastern Time, on July 22, 2026.
Established in 2024, the FSG-Guy Harvey Fellowship (previously the Guy Harvey Scholarship until 2023) is open to any graduate student who is enrolled full-time at one of Florida’s institutions of higher education, and conducting research on the biology, ecology, habitat or management of sustainable marine fisheries, including the study of aquaculture to reduce pressure on wild fish stocks.
Up to eight fellowships of $5,000 each will be awarded as a research stipend. Qualifying fellows may receive additional travel and professional development funds after the initial award, determined by need and opportunity. As part of a fellowship cohort, selected fellows will have the opportunity to share their work with the greater Sea Grant network and Guy Harvey Foundation through Florida Sea Grant’s Communications Team. Fellows will be expected to share their progress, including participating at public and scientific events to improve science communication skills when available.
Eligibility Requirements: Florida Sea Grant is accepting applications from graduate students enrolled at Florida academic institutions of higher learning. Students conducting research within a broad spectrum of methods needed to effectively understand and sustainably manage marine fish are eligible to apply.
Application Packets: A complete application packet consists of the following and must be reviewed and submitted through Florida Sea Grant’s InfoReady Portal. Specific instructions for each section can be found in the portal. Applicants are encouraged to review the application portal instructions before compiling their materials for additional guidance:
Curriculum Vitae (CV) showing education, employment, publication, experiences, and awards (2 page maximum).
Career Statement describing qualifications, key experiences, and goals for next career stage, including how this award will help (2 page maximum).
Research Description explaining the research objective(s) for the fellowship and how they address the priorities of the GHF, highlight innovative components (2 page maximum).
All undergraduate and graduate transcripts to convey the strength of academic performance (unofficial transcripts are accepted with institute name).
Letter of Recommendation submitted by the applicant’s graduate advisor that speaks to the capabilities of the applicant and their academic potential. This letter will be uploaded directly by the letter writer who will also be asked to attest that the student is in “good standing” in their progression toward their degree at the time of submission.
Since 2024, 24 fellows have been awarded from 8 Florida universities. Fellows share insights and information about their research and fellowship experiences on the Florida Sea Grant blog and social media and have the opportunity to engage and communicate their research with members of both Florida Sea Grant and the Guy Harvey Foundation.
