Project Abstract:

The project holds significant relevance in addressing several crucial issues within the realm of recreational reef fishing. Firstly, by focusing on refining a patentable new multi-use product, the project acknowledges the need for innovative solutions to promote sustainable angling practices. With increasing pressure on the world’s fisheries, it is imperative to develop tools that minimize negative impacts while ensuring the long-term viability of fishing activities. Secondly, the project’s emphasis on barotrauma reduction highlights a critical concern in recreational reef fishing. Barotrauma, a condition where fish experience organ damage due to changes in pressure, is a significant cause of mortality among released fish. By developing methods or technologies to mitigate barotrauma, this project aims to enhance fish survival rates and promote sustainable fishing practices.  Furthermore, the project’s recognition of the recreational reef fishery’s significance underscores its relevance. The recreational sector plays a vital role in coastal economies and ecosystem management. Ensuring the sustainability of reef fish populations, while simultaneously providing recreational opportunities, is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance and supporting local communities.  By integrating principles of sustainability, innovation, and conservation, this project brings forth a holistic approach to address pressing issues in recreational reef fishing. This proposal outlines a collaborative effort between Florida Sea Grant (FSG) and the University of Florida’s Shimberg Center for Housing Studies to develop a statewide resiliency initiative called “Disaster Resilient Florida,” aimed at addressing coastal climate change challenges with a focus on underserved communities. Drawing on critical scholarship and recognizing the intersection of justice and infrastructure, particularly in the face of climate change, the project aims to understand and address root causes of spatial injustice, promoting social progress and environmental resilience through community-driven research and advocacy.
