A zebra-striped lionfish swims head-on over a vibrant coral reef in clear, light blue water. The fish displays its distinctive fan-like, venomous pectoral fins outstretched to both sides, covered in alternating brown and white bands, while a cluster of small purple and tan brain corals sits directly beneath it.

Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Invasive Species

A lionfish with striking red, white, and black stripes and fan-like venomous spines swims over a vibrant coral reef, surrounded by smaller orange fish and pale sea anemones in clear blue water.

Lionfish, pythons, Brazilian pepper, oh my! It’s no secret that invasive species are an issue in Florida, but what are they? Invasive species are nonnative organisms introduced by humans and cause harm to the environment, economy, or people.

A cluster of small purple and white flowers blooming at the center of rounded, grey-green leaves on a beach vitex shrub.

These organisms aren’t just iguanas or cane toads but can be other animals, plants, or pathogens. Invasive plants and animals are often here to stay once they begin to reproduce.

You can report sightings using the Ivegot1 app since early detection and rapid response are used to manage their spread.

A Brazilian pepper tree branch laden with dense clusters of small, bright red and ripening yellowish-green berries nestled among glossy green compound leaves against a clear blue sky.

Many nonnative organisms pose little to no threat with proper ownership, so it’s important to be a responsible pet owner and check local and state regulations on what you’re allowed to keep or plant in your area.
