A group of wood storks gather in a shallow wetland marsh, with their white feathers and dark heads reflecting clearly on the calm water surface. In the center, one stork spreads its wide black-tipped wings, while others stand in the grass and wade nearby. In the background, a larger flock of storks lines the edge of the water.

Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: World Wetlands Day

A dense grove of tall, slender cypress trees with flared bases stands in calm, dark swamp water. The textured grey tree trunks and green forest canopy are perfectly reflected in the still water's surface below, creating a repeating vertical pattern throughout the swamp.

On February 2nd, we celebrate World Wetlands Day to raise awareness about the critical role of wetlands for people and the planet. Wetlands are areas frequently covered in water and support various plants and animals.

Florida contains nearly a 1/5 of the wetlands in the whole United States,. Yet these ecosystems are threatened by development and degradation, with half of the wetlands in the state already lost.

A roseate spoonbill stands prominently on green wetland bushes with its bright pink wings fully spread open, displaying its unique long, spatula-shaped bill. Surrounding the pink bird are several white American ibises and a white egret wading and preening among the green foliage along a shallow marsh water edge.

Hugging Florida’s shores, mangroves and marshes provide a home to some amazing animals, a nursery for fisheries, and protection of our coastline. Our inland swamps and freshwater marshes serve as pollution filters, support wildlife and waterfowl, and recharge our aquifers.
