Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Flooding

A white street sign reads CAUTION AREA SUBJECT TO TIDAL FLOODING VEHICLE DAMAGE MAY RESULT next to parked cars on a coastal road.

Climate change causes intense rain events that are occurring more often, increasing the chance of flooding in many communities.

Coastal urban communities typically have large areas of paved surfaces, such as roads and sidewalks. When heavy rainfall occurs in these communities, there is a greater likelihood of streets and homes flooding.

A line of cars drives through deep, splashing floodwater on a submerged city street.

As drainage and water storage systems age, they can be ineffective at handling intense rain events. As communities work to better deal with these events, it’s important for everyone to understand their flood risk and look at purchasing flood insurance to protect their home and belongings.

Florida Sea Grant assists and provides resources for communities to understand their risk and know their options for adapting to flooding.
