Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: National Estuaries Week

A large white egret stands half-hidden among tall green marsh grass by the edge of calm, blue water.

Estuaries are coastal areas where freshwater mixes with ocean water, providing a home to thousands. More than 2/3 of the commercial fish species caught in the United States spend some or all their lives in an estuary.

Estuaries protect against the impacts of climate change. These natural areas act as a buffer against storms, protecting communities and infrastructure from floods and rising seas.

Estuaries are also a favorite destination for fishers, birders, boaters, and kayakers.

You can help estuaries by:

  • Supporting or volunteering at your local National Estuary Program or National Estuarine Research Reserve
  • Participating in coastal recreational activities
  • Practice leave no trace behind or hosting a trash cleanup
