Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Sand dunes

A sandy beach dune covered in green sea oats stands before a calm blue ocean, with a wooden sand fence and a colorful striped beach umbrella visible in the background

Did you know that sand dunes are nature’s line of defense? Sand dunes are natural coastal mounds formed by the accumulation of wind-blown sand, support unique ecosystems and wildlife, and protect against storm surge.

A close-up stalk of sea oats frames a wide view of rolling white sand dunes covered in sparse coastal vegetation under a dramatic, overcast storm sky.

Unfortunately, many of Florida’s dunes are degraded by improper coastal construction or washed away by hurricanes, leading to the need for restoration. Florida Sea Grant provides resources for restoring dunes, but everyone can do their part.

Foot traffic weakens dunes through trampling and erosion. You can protect dunes by using only designated beach access points and walkways, leaving those beautiful sea oats untouched, and being mindful of dune restoration areas. Remember, dune vegetation grows by the inch, but dies by the foot!
