Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Artificial Reefs.

A scuba diver swims horizontally just above a seaweed-covered seabed, wearing black gear and a silver oxygen tank. In the background, another diver is visible near the surface of the green-tinted water

Did you know that Florida has one of the most active and diverse artificial reef programs in the US and the world? Artificial reefs are man made structures materials that are deployed at diverse depths to support marine life. There are almost 5000 artificial reefs around the state.

A large, cone-shaped concrete artificial reef module sits secured onto a flatbed trailer with yellow straps. The hollow grey structure features a rough rock-embedded surface and multiple rectangular window-like openings, with tall pine trees in the background.

Florida Sea Grant provides important guidance and support to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s artificial reef program.

These artificial reefs are developed with for a variety of purposes, including fishing and diving destinations, habitat restoration, and more recently, as memorial sites and underwater museums. They create and sustain businesses and jobs that have an economic impact in coastal communities.
