Silhouetted crowds of people stroll along a wide sandy beach during a bright sunset. The large, brilliant sun hangs low in a hazy golden sky, casting a long shimmering reflection across the ocean surface and stretching dark shadows from the walkers across the shoreline.

Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Clean beaches

An arm extends from the right side of the frame, throwing a crumpled brown paper bag into one of two public trash cans lined with black plastic bags. The scene is set on a sunny beach, with a wooden post holding the bins and the ocean waves softly blurring in the background
Trash being thrown away at the beach.

The first week of July is Clean Beaches Week. Removing trash from the beach is always important, especially during this busiest beach week of the year. Remember to dispose of trash in secure bins and leave no trace when you visit the beach. Reduce plastic trash by avoiding single-use plastic all together and opt for reusable items.

Clean Beaches Week also celebrates a healthy beach lifestyle by eating a healthy diet of sustainably caught local seafood and getting exercise by walking or playing on the beach. Just remember, you cannot have a healthy beach lifestyle without a healthy beach!

You can keep our ocean plastic-free by visiting tinyurl.com/PlasticAware to pledge to reduce your reliance on single use plastics.
