A large quantity of rough, porous beige sea sponges fills a curved, wide-mesh metal and rope basket suspended over calm, blue water. The intricate texture of the sponges is highly visible through the thin netting of the basket, which hangs in close-up against a softly blurred coastal background.

Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Sponges

An underwater view shows a bright orange, textured sea sponge growing next to a larger, dark grey-brown sponge on a murky seabed. The surrounding area is covered with small, cup-shaped marine algae and scattered blades of seagrass in hazy, yellowish water.

Many of us know about sponges in the kitchen, but what about sponges in the ocean? Sponges serve as important components of shallow and deep-water bottom communities.

Sponges offer numerous ecological benefits: they provide habitat for fish and invertebrates, enhance bottom habitat, and possess the capability to filter large volumes of water. The ability of sponges to filter organic matter from the water column is of particular importance for water clarity.

Florida Sea Grant is assisting with sponge restoration around the state. Sponge restoration is done through sponge propagation or gardening, with the goals of habitat restoration and water quality improvements.

Two scuba divers are submerged in murky, green water over a sandy seabed covered with low-lying seagrass and algae. In the foreground, one diver wearing a black wetsuit, scuba gear, and bright red gloves leans close to the sea floor, reaching out to examine the vegetation. In the hazy background, a second diver is visible swimming slightly higher in the water column, trailing a small stream of bubbles.
