A fisherman standing on the edge of a white boat reels in a small shark, with his fishing rod bent in a sharp curve over the water. The man wears a light grey long-sleeved shirt and dark grey shorts as he grips the rod tightly with both hands. The shark's head and pointed dorsal fin break the surface of the green, brackish coastal water, which ripples outward under a wide, partly cloudy sky on the horizon.

Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Ethical Angling

A smiling man standing on a boat holds up a light-brown, spotted grouper fish using an orange lip-gripper tool over deep blue ocean water. He wears a light-blue "Sea Grant Florida" t-shirt, a matching blue baseball cap, sunglasses, and blue jeans, while holding a black fishing rod in his other hand under a clear, bright sky.

With 4 million licensed anglers and more world record fish catches than any other country or US state, Florida is known as the fishing capital of the world.

As Florida’s population grows and technology makes catching fish easier than ever, we all need to do our part to reduce pressure on fish populations and the habitats that support them, like seagrasses and reefs.

Whether you fish for keeps or prefer catch and release, there are many steps you can take the next time you hit the water to reduce your environmental impact.

Florida Sea Grant offers training on ethical fishing practices through the Florida Friendly Angler program, a self-paced online course available to anyone who fishes in Florida.

A person wearing a blue cap and sunglasses sits in a light-blue fishing kayak on calm, turquoise water under a bright blue sky with wispy clouds. The kayaker holds a fishing rod extending over the water, with a teal cooler strapped to the back of the vessel. In the distant background, a small, sandy island with green trees sits along the horizon line.
