Project

Expanding Reef Fisheries Extension Across States

Full Title: Extending Our Reach: A multi-state collaborative approach to reef fisheries Extension

Project Abstract:

This project, spearheaded by Florida Sea Grant, aims to address the critical need for localized and relevant information on reef fisheries for stakeholders across Florida. By leveraging the expertise of a dedicated Work Action Group (WAG) consisting of 15 Florida Sea Grant Extension Agents and 5 affiliated faculty specialists, the initiative will enhance communication and representation of fisheries issues statewide. The Fish WAG will play a pivotal role in providing feedback, support, and dissemination of project materials, working closely with the newly appointed Sustainable Fisheries Communications Coordinator. Key agents, Angela Collins, Shelly Krueger, and Ana Zangroniz, will lead efforts in their respective regions—Tampa Bay, Florida Keys, and Miami—to coordinate stakeholder education and engagement. The project will involve the distribution of longitudinal surveys, recruitment of Advisory Panel members, and development of educational modules for reef fish anglers, expanding upon the Florida Friendly Fishing Guide Program. Additionally, regional field activities will be organized to gather stakeholder input and promote education. Affiliate Ed Camp will develop tools to analyze data from the NMFS Marine Recreational Information Program, producing reports on angler behavior and economic impacts to inform management decisions. Agents Sipos and Scharf will support project objectives, ensuring maximum participation and stakeholder reach throughout Florida.
