Project Abstract:

This project addresses the pressing need to balance human development and natural ecosystem preservation in Florida’s coastal zones. By employing spatial planning and ecosystem services approaches, the project seeks to optimize land acquisitions that enhance habitat resilience and community protection against climate change impacts. The methodology includes the use of advanced modeling tools like Marxan to prioritize land purchases and integrate stakeholder input for effective policy development. The expected outcomes include improved land use strategies, enhanced resilience to sea-level rise, and strengthened partnerships between academic institutions and local governments. The project aims to provide a replicable model for other regions facing similar environmental challenges, ultimately contributing to sustainable coastal management and conservation efforts.
