FSG/Guy Harvey Fellowship Applications Now Open for 2026 Cohort

Florida Sea Grant is now accepting applications for the 2026 FSG/Guy Harvey Fellowship Program from graduate students at Florida universities who are conducting research that will help support the sustainable management of marine fish. Applications are due to Florida Sea Grant by 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time, on July 22, 2025.

Established in 2024, the FSG/Guy Harvey Fellowship (previously the Guy Harvey Scholarship until 2023) is open to any graduate student who is enrolled full-time at one of Florida’s institutions of higher education, and conducting research on the biology, ecology, habitat or management of sustainable marine fisheries.

Up to eight fellowships of $5,000 each will be awarded as a research stipend. Qualifying fellows may receive up  to $1,500 in additional travel and professional development funds after the initial award, determined based upon need and opportunity. As part of a fellowship cohort, selected fellows will have the opportunity to share their work with the greater Sea Grant network and Guy Harvey Foundation through Florida Sea Grant’s Communications Team. Fellows will be expected to share their progress, including participating at public and scientific events to improve science communication skills when available.

Eligibility Requirements:
Florida Sea Grant is accepting applications from graduate students enrolled at Florida academic institutions of higher learning. Students conducting research within a broad spectrum of methods needed to effectively understand and sustainably manage marine fish are eligible to apply.

Application Packets:
A complete application packet consists of the following and must be reviewed and submitted through the eSeaGrant online portal at eflseagrant.ifas.ufl.edu. Specific instructions for each section can be found in eSeaGrant. Applicants are encouraged to review the portal before compiling their materials:

  4. All unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts to convey the strength of academic performance.
  5. Letter of Recommendation submitted by the applicant’s graduate supervisor that speaks to the capabilities of the applicant and their academic potential. This letter will be uploaded directly by the letter writer who will also be asked to attest that the student is in “good standing” in their progression toward their degree at the time of submission.

In 2024 and 2025, eight fellows were selected to represent the inaugural cohort of this program. The Guy Harvey Fellowship has been transformative for my research and career in fisheries science. It has connected me with a network of fellows conducting cutting-edge fisheries research and has fostered valuable relationships with the Florida Sea Grant office,” said Susannah Cogburn, an M.S. student at Florida Gulf Coast University. “These connections provide ongoing support and collaboration opportunities that will be instrumental throughout my career.”

Fellows share insights and information about their research and fellowship experiences on the Florida Sea Grant blog.

"This fellowship has given me the opportunity to take one of my dissertation chapters from a plan to reality. There are a lot of moving parts in trying to effectively link animal movement to energy landscapes and very specific equipment needed to measure it. Through this fellowship, I have had the freedom and funding to plan out how to conduct this research, which has allowed me to take my dissertation in a direction that would have otherwise not been possible."
