Carolyn Kovacs, a former resident lecturer of tropical coastal ecology at The School for Field Studies, has been named the new Florida Sea Grant agent with UF/IFAS Extension for Flagler and Volusia Counties.
In her new role, Kovacs will develop and lead a marine and coastal resources education and outreach program that will work to adapt science-based ocean and coastal research to meet the local needs of Flagler and Volusia Counties.
The Delray Beach native said she applied for the role to help make marine science more accessible to communities and promote environmental education and conservation in Florida.
“I’ve been out of Florida for a while, but it’s a place that always feels like home,” Kovacs said, “I’ve had the chance to visit and live in a lot of amazing places, but there is something to be said about wanting to preserve and educate others about your home.”
Kovacs received her bachelor’s degree in biology at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and her master’s degree in marine science from Savannah State University in Georgia. As a graduate student, she was selected as a GK-12 Fellow, which garnered her experience working closely with science teachers within the public school system to plan, develop and deliver hands-on curriculum to middle school students.
As a former Sea|mester program manager, instructor and scuba guide, Kovacs taught marine biology and oceanography to university students living aboard sailing vessels that traveled throughout the Caribbean and around the world. Prior, she also mentored high school and undergraduate students aboard travel and service learning programs in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Australia and Thailand.
Kovacs is most excited to have the opportunity and support from Florida Sea Grant to develop her own programs for Flagler and Volusia Counties. She looks forward to working with the wide range of ages within Flagler and Volusia Counties, as she has worked with young adults for the greater part of her career.
“Carolyn has shown that she is flexible and adaptable, skills that will serve her well as a Florida Sea Grant Extension Agent,” said Dr. Maia McGuire, associate director of education and extension for Florida Sea Grant.
