Episode 48-Invasive Species
/
Today on Marine Science Minute with Florida Sea Grant: Invasive SpeciesÂ
Lionfish, pythons, Brazilian pepper, oh my! It’s no secret that invasive species are an issue in Florida, but what are they? Invasive species are nonnative organisms introduced by humans and cause harm to the environment, economy, or people. Â
These organisms aren’t just iguanas or cane toads but can be other animals, plants, or pathogens. Invasive plants and animals are often here to stay once they begin to reproduce. You can report sightings using the Ivegot1 app since early detection and rapid response are used to manage their spread.Â
Many nonnative organisms pose little to no threat with proper ownership, so it’s important to be a responsible pet owner and check local and state regulations on what you’re allowed to keep or plant in your area. Â
