The Indian River Lagoon is the most biologically diverse estuary in the United States. This is due to the unique biogeography of the lagoon as a transition zone between the tropical coastal ecosystems to the south (mangroves and coral reefs) and the temperate coastline to the north (saltgrass marshes). As a result, this unique waterway has been designated as “An estuary of national significance.” The Indian River Lagoon and the near-shore ocean waters support active commercial and recreational fisheries.
