Responsibilities

Serves as Director for program including strategic planning, implementation of research, communications, extension and education programs and program performance and accountability and budget. Within the program, coordinates research project competitions and the scientific review process.Monitors one-half of research projects, directs programs in fisheries, seafood quality, aquaculture (some), coastal hazards and water dependent businesses and directs student programs. Served twice as President of the Sea Grant Association and two terms as Chair of the External Relations Committee. Currently serves on the Board of the Aylesworth Foundation for the Advancement of Marine Science and is also Senior Associate Dean and Director of the School of Natural Resources and Environment.

Specialties

Dr. Cato has published 26 monographs, seven journal articles, 92 articles in proceedings and magazines, nine book chapters, 33 reviewed publications and has given 106 papers and presentations. He has organized or participated in about 100 workshops and conferences, on subjects ranging from fisheries limited entry to the potential impact of a post-embargo Cuba on Florida marine industries.  He worked on special assignment with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy, to determine the economic benefits of improving seafood safety, for the Bangladesh shrimp industry. He has given seminars in Italy, Cuba, Russia, England and Costa Rica, and recently completed a shrimp culture economics project and analysis of the safety and quality of the shrimp in Nicaragua (brief resume). He is co-editor of Marine Ornamental Species: Collection, Culture and Conservation, published in 2003.
