Florida Center for COSEE Central Gulf of Mexico

COSEE is a national initiative in ocean science education funded by the National Science Foundation. There are a number of COSEE Centers around the country. Each COSEE Center provides professional development opportunties to enhance ocean literacy for both formal and non-formal educators.
The Central Gulf of Mexico COSEE includes the states of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The University of Florida in Gainesville is Florida's CGOM Center. This Center is a
collaboration between Florida Sea Grant and the Florida 4-H Program.
COSEE Informal Education Workshop -- FULL
This workshop is now full. The information is left here as reference material.
A weekend marine education workshop is being offered Sept. 11-13, 2009, on the Indian River Lagoon in Fort Pierce. Educators will learn about Florida’s coastal ecosystem and marine life from well known research scientists and marine education specialists.
Participants will participate in both lecture and hands-on activities that will provide them with new skills that they can use in conducting field and classroom-based experiences with youth.
A $25 registration fee will secure your application, and cover educational materials and a lunch on Saturday. Lodging will be provided at the Dockside Inn in Ft. Pierce for those that may need it. Participants who complete the weekend workshop will also receive a $200 stipend to help cover additional expenses.
Note: The workshop is now full. For more information on the workshop, visit:

Other contributors to this workshop are the Smithsonian Research Institute and Marine Station, Florida Institute of Technology, and the St. Lucie County Sea Grant Extension Office.
Summer Teacher Institutes
The CGOM COSEE offers summer field institutes in ocean science education for formal educators and an ocean science workshop for nonformal educators. These two events alternate years when they occur depending on the state.
The 2008 teacher institute was held in Cedar Key from June 22-27. Dates for future COSEE institutes will be announced.

The summer institutes are open to middle school teachers (grades 5-9). Ocean scientists are also recruited and work side by side with the teachers during the week. Lodging and meals are covered
and stipends are provided.
