In the State of Florida, water and water quality are compelling issues. With more than 20 major estuaries, where
the fresh water from the land mixes with the salt water from the sea, Florida sports a coastal diversity unmatched
by any other state.
Florida's 1,350-mile coastline and its estuarine and nearshore ecosystem are are prone not only to the impact of the state's 17 million residents and 70 million annual visitors, but to occasional bouts of mother nature's fury. Florida Sea Grant is involved in several key issues in a coordinated manner, ranging from discovery of how habitats function to advising citizen groups in enhancing the practical use and conservation of the state's coastal and marine resources.

Artificial Reef Research at Florida Sea Grant
Artificial reefs in Florida have been especially popular since the 1970s. Eleven major
studies completed at Florida Sea Grant since 1984 are summarized here in easy-to-read, semi-technical language. Remarkably, this modest effort
still makes Florida the most active in this area of all 30 Sea Grant programs nationally.
