The final draft
of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy report is scheduled
for release soon. Recommendations in the report are intended
to influence and advise the national direction of marine research,
outreach and education for coming years. A conference is being
organized to produce a unified research agenda for the Gulf
of Mexico region. Attendees will be elected officials, academia,
industry and agency representatives. The conference is scheduled
for July 7-8, 2004 at Texas A&M University in College
Station, Texas. A website under development about the conference

On July 7, the
agenda includes a graduate student poster session. Florida
Sea Grant will support travel for up to two graduate students
to participate in the poster session. Graduate students are
invited to submit applications for consideration based on
the following guidelines:
- Must be a graduate
student in a Florida university.
- The poster must
be based on your graduate research.
- The work must
be related to a Gulf of Mexico issue in 1) ocean observing;
2) biodiversity; 3) oceans and human health; 4) watersheds
and sediment management; 5) human impacts; 6) policy, economics
and social sciences; or 7) industry.
- A one page abstract
describing the poster (12 point font) and an endorsement
letter by the student's major advisor must be submitted.
